Backyard

I’ve been chipping away at this illustration for a few weeks now. I realized that my portfolio needs more environment art; This is scene with my character Valerie, in her back yard. She lives in rural/suburban Kansas, a decade after the US government broke down and society collapsed. People have begun to rebuild thing, but Valerie’s suburban enclave is just too isolated for her to know this. She scavenges through the ruined mcmansions, collecting food, useful items, and music.

In this seen, she’s joined for dinner by a lone crow. She feeds him a spoonful of meat, and he becomes her companion throughout the rest of the story.
